SIM-only deals, every UK network compared.

Cheap, flexible SIM plans from every major UK network — keep your phone, slash your bill. Sorted by lowest monthly price, refreshed every day.

Quick answers
What is SIM-only? +
Just airtime — calls, texts and data — for a phone you already own. No handset baked into the bill, so it's much cheaper than a phone contract.
Will my current phone work? +
Almost certainly yes — as long as your phone is unlocked. To check, pop in a SIM from a different network. If it works, you're unlocked. Phones bought outright are usually unlocked; phones from old contracts may be locked but networks must unlock for free.
How do I switch and keep my number? +
Text PAC to 65075 from your current network — they must reply within 60 seconds with your code. Give it to your new network when you sign up. Switch happens in 1 working day.

The SIM-only guide

Everything you need to know before you switch.

From what SIM-only actually means, to how much you could realistically save — in one place.

Airtime only
Calls, texts and data for a phone you already own. No handset cost baked in — so the monthly price is much lower.
Keep your phone
Any unlocked phone works. If it ran a SIM before, it'll run a new one. No need to upgrade.
Switch any time
30-day rolling plans let you leave without penalty. 12-month plans cost less per month but carry exit fees.
Big savings possible
Splitting handset cost from airtime can save hundreds per year versus a bundled phone contract.
No credit check (often)
30-day and PAYG plans rarely require a credit check — great for students, new arrivals or anyone building credit.
eSIM ready
Most major networks now support eSIM — a digital SIM activated by QR code, no delivery wait needed.

01
Check your exit fees
Log in to your current network's app or call them. If you're mid-contract you may owe an early-exit charge — factor this into the saving.
02
Get your PAC code
Text PAC to 65075 from your current SIM. By law, they must reply within 60 seconds with your code. You have 30 days to use it.
PAC = Porting Authorisation Code. It moves your number to the new network automatically.
03
Pick your new plan
Compare deals on Olimit. Decide: 30-day rolling for maximum flexibility, or 12-month for a lower monthly price. Check data, roaming and eSIM support.
04
Order your SIM or eSIM
Physical SIMs arrive in 1–3 working days. eSIMs are delivered as a QR code by email — scan it in Settings and you're live in under 5 minutes.
05
Give the PAC to your new network
You can usually do this at checkout or in the app after sign-up. Your number transfers in 1 working day. No downtime — calls and texts forward until cut-over.
£50/mo
This is what you pay now — phone + airtime combined.
£15/mo
Typical SIM-only unlimited plans start around £12–£20/mo.

Everything You Need to Know About SIM-Only Deals

SIM-only plans have become one of the most popular ways to save money on mobile bills in the UK.

Instead of bundling a handset into a long contract, SIM-only deals give you just the mobile service — allowing you to keep your current phone, control upgrade costs, and switch networks more easily.

This guide explains:

  • what SIM-only deals are

  • why they have become so popular

  • how to choose the best plan

  • which UK providers stand out

  • how much you could save

  • and how roaming and eSIM now fit into modern SIM-only contracts.

What Is a SIM-Only Deal?

A SIM-only deal is a mobile phone contract that includes calls, texts and mobile data — but no handset.

These plans are particularly suited to people who:

  • already own a phone and want to keep using it

  • prefer to buy devices outright or refurbished

  • want to avoid monthly phone repayments

  • like flexible contracts with lower ongoing costs.

With SIM-only, you pay only for your allowance and remain in control of when — or whether — you upgrade your device.

Why Are SIM-Only Deals So Popular?

SIM-only adoption has accelerated in recent years for several reasons.

Smartphone prices have increased
Premium handsets regularly exceed £700–£1,200, encouraging many buyers to separate device purchases from airtime plans.

Greater flexibility
Rolling monthly contracts allow customers to move networks easily without early-exit penalties.

Rising data needs
Many SIM-only plans now include generous — or unlimited — data allowances at lower prices than traditional phone-and-plan bundles.

Why Use Olimit Instead of Buying Direct?

Olimit tracks SIM-only offers across the UK market and highlights plans that provide strong value compared with buying directly from networks.

This can include:

  • promotional pricing

  • boosted data allowances

  • temporary discounts

  • exclusive bundles.

Real-World Example

A customer purchased a 120GB plan on Three for £12 per month through Olimit, while the same plan cost £18 directly — saving £72 across one year.

They later took out a second identical plan for a family member, producing a combined saving of £144 compared with buying direct.

Types of SIM-Only Deals

Most UK providers offer several contract formats.

Rolling Monthly Contracts

  • No long-term commitment

  • Cancel at any time

  • Ideal for testing coverage or short-term use.

Fixed-Term Contracts (12–24 months)

  • Often cheaper per month

  • Early-exit fees may apply

  • Annual price rises can occur.

Data-Only SIMs

  • Designed for tablets, laptops or mobile hotspots

  • No calls or texts included.

eSIM Plans

  • Digital SIM installed via QR code

  • No physical card required

  • Supported on most flagship phones released in recent years.

How to Choose the Best SIM-Only Deal

1) Check Your Data Usage

Review the last three months of usage in your phone settings or provider app. Streaming, gaming and hotspot use can significantly increase monthly needs.

2) Decide on Contract Length

Rolling contracts suit flexibility.
Longer contracts usually deliver lower monthly pricing.

3) Review Coverage and Speed

Coverage varies by location. Consult Ofcom-based maps and independent testing sites such as Opensignal or RootMetrics.

4) Compare Deals Side-by-Side

Use filters to narrow by price, data allowance and contract term.

5) Look for Extras

Some plans include roaming, rollover data, tethering or entertainment subscriptions.

Top UK SIM-Only Providers

Major UK networks and their sub-brands all compete heavily in SIM-only pricing, including:

  • Vodafone

  • O2

  • EE

  • Three

Alongside these are well-known MVNO brands such as VOXI, Lebara, Lyca Mobile, Talkmobile and SMARTY.

These providers typically focus on competitive pricing, rolling contracts and modern features such as eSIM.

How to Switch to a SIM-Only Plan

Moving to SIM-only is usually straightforward:

  1. Check whether your current contract has exit fees.

  2. Request a PAC code by texting PAC to 65075.

  3. Choose a new plan.

  4. Order your SIM or eSIM.

  5. Activate the service.

  6. Provide your PAC to transfer your number — usually completed within one working day.

SIM-Only vs Pay-Monthly Contracts

Feature SIM-Only Pay-Monthly
Monthly cost Lower Higher (includes handset)
Phone included No Yes
Flexibility High Lower
Credit checks Often lighter Usually required
Upgrade cycle User-controlled Tied to contract
Best for Existing phone owners Those needing a new handset

How Much Could You Save?

Separating your handset from your airtime can significantly reduce long-term costs.

For example:

  • Pay-monthly bundle: £50 per month

  • SIM-only unlimited plan: £16 per month

Over 24 months:

• Pay-monthly = £1,200
• SIM-only = £384

Total saving: £816

International Use and Roaming

Many SIM-only plans include EU roaming, although allowances and fair-use limits vary.

Some networks extend roaming further, while others charge daily fees outside Europe. Always check the destination list and overseas data limits before travelling.

What Is eSIM and Why Does It Matter?

eSIM is an embedded digital SIM that removes the need for a physical card.

Benefits include:

  • instant activation

  • easy switching between networks

  • multiple numbers on one phone

  • convenience for travellers.

Most UK networks and their sub-brands now support eSIM across selected plans.

Tips for Getting the Most From a SIM-Only Plan

  • Use Wi-Fi where available

  • Track usage monthly

  • Choose unlimited data if you stream frequently

  • Consider dual-SIM phones for travel

  • Review your deal annually

  • Switch providers when better offers appear.

Summary

SIM-only deals are well-suited to people who:

  • want to keep their current phone

  • prefer flexible contracts

  • want to reduce monthly costs

  • value control over upgrades

  • are comfortable buying handsets separately.

For many UK customers, SIM-only remains the most cost-effective way to stay connected.

SIM-only questions, answered

Everything you need to know before switching your SIM.

What's the difference between SIM-only and a phone contract? +
A SIM-only plan is just airtime — calls, texts and data — that you slot into a phone you already own. A phone contract bundles a brand-new handset into the monthly cost, so you're effectively paying off the phone over 24 or 36 months. SIM-only is much cheaper if your current phone still works.
Can I keep my phone number when I switch SIM? +
Yes. Text PAC to 65075 from your current network — they have to send your PAC code within 60 seconds by law. Give the code to your new network when you sign up and your number transfers automatically, usually within one working day.
How long do SIM-only contracts last? +
Three common options: 30-day rolling (cancel any time), 12 months (best price/flexibility balance) or 24 months (cheapest per month but locked in). 30-day plans typically cost £1–£3 more per month than 12-month equivalents.
What's an MVNO — networks like Smarty, Voxi or Lebara? +
MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) don't own masts — they lease capacity from one of the big four networks (EE, Vodafone, O2, Three) and resell it under their own brand, usually cheaper. Smarty runs on Three, Voxi on Vodafone, Lebara on Vodafone, iD Mobile on Three. You get the same coverage as the host network.
Can I get truly unlimited data on a SIM-only plan? +
Yes — unlimited data SIMs are available from EE, Vodafone, Three, O2, Smarty, Voxi and others. Some bundle a hotspot/tethering cap and some throttle speeds after a fair-use threshold, so always check the small print.
eSIM or physical SIM — which should I get? +
If your phone supports it, eSIM is faster and easier: you scan a QR code and you're connected in minutes, with no waiting for delivery. iPhone XS and newer, Galaxy S20 and newer, and Pixel 4 and newer all support eSIM. Physical SIMs still work on every phone but take 1–3 days to arrive.
Will my phone work with any UK SIM? +
Almost certainly yes — but only if it's unlocked. Most phones bought outright are unlocked. Phones bought on contract before December 2021 may be locked to that network — call them and ask for it to be unlocked (it's free and a legal right since 2021).
Do SIM-only prices rise mid-contract? +
Some networks apply an annual price rise, usually every April, tied to CPI inflation or a fixed percentage. This is always disclosed in the contract. 30-day rolling plans are typically free of mid-contract hikes since you can leave any time. Each deal on Olimit shows an annual price-rise warning where applicable.
What happens at the end of my SIM-only contract? +
Nothing automatic — your plan rolls onto a 30-day basis at the same price unless you switch. The moment your contract ends, shop around — you'll often save £5–£10/mo by moving (or just renewing) instead of staying on the default rolling rate.
